In individual counseling, student work with a therapist to explore their concerns and work to better understand and resolve their difficulties.
If you are referred for individual counseling, here’s what to expect: In your first meeting with your therapist, you will have a chance to describe your concerns and the two of you will establish 1-2 goals for therapy work. It is important that you approach therapy with a “work” frame of reference, as change is a process that takes active involvement from you! Individual sessions typically last 45 minutes and may start weekly or every other week, and then be less frequent as you are improving.
In order to serve the greatest number of students, we are not able to offer long-term therapy services at SCC; we generally limit individual session to no more than 12 per academic year.* However, we will be happy to meet with you for a referral consultation session if you request.
*But, group sessions are unlimited! Please see the group page.
