What to Expect
Therapy/counseling sessions last around 45 minutes. At your first appointment, you will have a chance to describe your concerns and you and your clinician will establish one or two goals for therapy work. It is important that you approach individual therapy with a “work” frame of reference, as change is a process that takes active involvement from you! Individual sessions may start weekly or every other week, and then be less frequent as you are improving.
Therapy will look and feel different with each clinician. Therapists might work from a cognitive perspective, or with your behaviors, or feelings, and with others the work is relationship-focused. In all cases, you should feel listened to, affirmed, and cared for.
In order to serve the greatest number of students, we are not able to offer long-term therapy services at SCC; most students get their needs met in just a few sessions.* However, we will be happy to meet with you for a referral consultation session, if you request one.
